Every January, the cycle begins. People everywhere set ambitious resolutions to improve their lives. "This year, I’ll wake up early!" "I’ll eat healthier!" "I’ll work out regularly!" For the first two weeks, gyms are packed, grocery carts are filled with greens, and alarm clocks are set earlier than usual. But fast forward a few weeks, and enthusiasm fizzles out. Gyms become ghost towns, fast food sneaks back into the diet, and that snooze button once again reigns supreme.
Why does this happen year after year? The pattern is clear: we’re great at setting resolutions but often fail to follow through. This year, I’m committed to breaking the cycle. Let me share how I plan to do it—and hopefully, inspire you to join me.
The Cycle of Resolutions
First, let’s talk about why resolutions often fail. In most cases, it boils down to two things:
- Unrealistic Goals – We aim for too much, too soon, or too vaguely.
- Lack of Accountability – We keep our resolutions to ourselves, with no one to hold us accountable.
Take gyms, for example. Owners intentionally oversubscribe their memberships in January, fully aware most people won’t stick around after the first month. That’s a hard truth, but it highlights the importance of realistic planning and sustained motivation.
To break free from this pattern, I’m taking a different approach to my resolutions this year. Here’s what I’ve set out to achieve in 2025, along with the stories that make these goals so meaningful.
Resolution #1: Completing a Half Marathon – Step by Step
In 2024, I ran my first 10-kilometer race—a quarter marathon. Standing at the starting line, nerves gripped me. Could I even finish? As I ran, each step felt like a small victory, and crossing the finish line was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life.
This experience taught me the power of perseverance and the value of breaking big goals into smaller, manageable steps. Inspired by that, I’ve committed to completing a half marathon in March 2025. It’s not just about the run; it’s about proving to myself that with determination, I can go further—both in running and in life.
Resolution #2: Writing a Book – One Blog at a Time
Last year, I wrote several blogs that sparked insightful conversations. Writing allowed me to connect, reflect, and share ideas in ways I hadn’t imagined.
This year, I’ve resolved to take it a step further: I’ll write 52 blogs, one for each week, and by the end of the year, compile them into a book. Writing isn’t just about creating content; it’s about building a legacy. Words have the power to outlast us, to inspire and connect, and I want to leave behind something meaningful.
Resolution #3: Becoming a Better Speaker – Sharing Stories Online
As a member of Toastmasters, I’ve grown as a public speaker. But in today’s world, public speaking doesn’t end on a stage—it extends to online platforms. Inspired by my son, Tejas, who shares his passion for singing on social media, I’ve realized the importance of digital storytelling.
This year, I’m launching a YouTube channel to post at least two videos every month. Whether it’s sharing personal stories, tips, or inspirational messages, my goal is to connect with a broader audience and continuously improve as a storyteller.
The New Year Resolution Challenge
Now, how do we make sure these resolutions stick? Here’s what I’ve learned:
- Write Them Down – It’s easy to forget abstract ideas. Writing them down makes your goals real and tangible.
- Keep Them Realistic – Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many goals. Stick to three or four meaningful ones.
- Announce Them – Accountability is a game-changer. Share your goals with friends, family, or even on social media. When others know about your commitments, you’re more likely to follow through.
